Sacral chakra puzzle

[iron labyrinth module]

This page contains spoilers for the Iron Labyrinth One-shot

This puzzle is the first puzzle the players will encounter if they choose the left path from the starting position. It appears to be a simple water pouring puzzle but as with the other elemental puzzles, there is a twist

Puzzle setup

When the characters enter the room, the will see the Sacral chakra symbol (shown right) carved into the stone floor. In the symbol there are five circles, and the players see an object placed on these circles in the floor carving. Four of these objects are oddly shaped metal cisterns. The tallest of these is just shy of five feet tall, and each cistern gets progressively smaller. The cisterns are clearly marked with the numbers 9, 7, 5, and 3. Given the size of the cisterns, it would seem reasonable that the numbers on each cistern correspond to their total volume. The largest of the cisterns is marked with a 9, and is full of water.

The fifth object is a pedastal on which sits a spherical glass case which contains a floating keystone gem of polished orange coral. The players will not have seen anything like it before. Carved into the wall there is a set of numbers which reads “2 2 2 2”

Puzzle solution

The normal solution to these puzzles is to use the differences in the cisterns to isolate quantities of water, eventually filling them to the desired quantities. The target solution is to fill each cistern to a quantity of 2 non descript “units” of water which I will call gallons for simplicity

Because the cisterns are fixed to the ground the players will need their Hydromancer or Desimancer (using attract) to pull the water out of the cisterns. If you are not using the premade characters, an Aeromancer with Fling could also manage this but it would take more time

As far as I can determine, there is no direct solution to this puzzle without bringing in additional water from the pool just outside the puzzle room

Solution

  • Take the water from the 9 cistern and pour it into the 7 cistern, leaving 2 gallons in the 9 cistern
  • Take water from the 7 cistern and pour it into the 5 cistern, leaving 2 gallons in the 7 cistern
  • Take water from the 5 cistern and pour it into the 3 cistern, leaving 2 gallons in the 5 cistern
  • Take the 2 gallons out of the 5 cistern and suspend it temproarily
  • Fill the 5 cistern with water from outside the room
  • Take water from the 5 cistern and pour it into the 3 cistern, leaving 2 gallons in the 5 cistern
  • Remove the water from the 3 cistern and replace it with the suspended water from step 4

Reward

The coral inside the glass case has six facets and Luck 2. This grants the player up to six chances to take advantage on a skill check, ability check, or hit roll. Alternatively, a player can reroll all “1”s on any roll. The stone can be bound to the Sacral or Root Chakras

Points
There is only one way to solve this puzzle, and that is by using ki to bring in water from the previous room. If the puzzle is solved, the players get 6 points
