Ilwyn is built on the west bank of the Beraek river, north of Ueneg, its coastal sister city. It is connected by road to Ueneg and Refir. Stretching up and out of the Mahke forest is Ilwyn's most distinctive feature, the large obsidian obelisk at the center of the ruins around which the city is built. The settlement was built during the cultural renaissance to study and protect the ruins, which are among the largest and oldest still intact today

The obelisk is visible from every point in the city, and has become part of the identity of the citizens. Despite years of study, very little is known about the structure's purpose. Having a unique theory about the obelisk's function is something of a tradition in the city
