Ki spirits

[galactic lore]

Ki spirits are intelligent beings and are comprised of one of the four elements. They can span great distances, with the most powerful Ki spirits spreading across the entire galaxy. Ki spirits are able to sense the world around them from any part of their collective elemental forms, shifting their focus to any one location within their presence.

Spirit types

Atua

Pronunciation: (AH-too-ah)
The Atua are local spirits that are comprised of a large body of an element, such as a planet, an ocean, or a lightning cloud. These spirits have names but they are not generally known, especially outside their star system. These spirits are very intelligent by humanoid standards, and they tend to watch the events within their sphere very closely, and are often emotionally involved in those events. Atua have the ability to intervene in the lives of their humanoid occupants, and often do. Some Atua are highly involved, while others are intentionally more passive. Atua generally feel obligated to promote the well being of all humanoids native to their domain, and typically extend this duty to travelers, though there are notable exceptions. When interacting with humanoids, Atua are able to manifest themselves as humanoid shaped elementals made of their native element. They use these elementals for verbal communication, physical interaction, and as a means to present themselves in a familiar form

Sura

Pronunciation: (SOO-rah)
Sura are considerably more expansive and powerful than the Atua, covering entire galactic branches with their presence. Sura are not localized to any specific body of element, but can control and embody any amount of their element within their domain, even element that makes up an Atua. The Sura are three to five times more intelligent than any humanoid creature. While the Sura watch the humanoids within their domains, they tend to focus on large scale interactions and events, and also spend a lot of their focus on the interactions between humanoids of the various galactic arms, and the actions of the other Sura. The Sura are powerful, capable of manipulating vast amounts of their element. When interacting with humanoids, the Sura are capable of taking the shape and form of any humanoid species. When taking this form, their concentrated form causes their eyes to glow with a dull light, making them easy to distinguish from normal humanoids. Sura are able to repress and minimize this glow, requiring a very keen eye to see it. A legendary perception roll is required to detect this light when being repressed

Deva

Pronunciation: (DAY-vah)
The four Deva are the most powerful creatures in the galaxy. Their presence spans the entire galaxy, though their power and focus is strongest in the Galactic Core. Their intelligence is staggering, able to split their focus many times over, giving humanoid across the galaxy the impression that the Deva are omnipresent. The Deva's power is unparalleled. They are able to move or to obliterate planets, manipulate the galactic timeline, and reshape reality itself. The Deva watch the events of the galaxy with keen interest, and are obsessed with maintaining balance in all things. The Deva have the ability to manifest themselves in any physical form they choose, including all of the humanoid species

Elemental types

Ki spirits can be comprised of any of the four elements

Air Spirits
Ki Spirits of air are the most diverse in their personalities. They can be steady and stoic, gentle and calm, or capricious and arbitrary. Atua of air cover large areas of their star systems; often a single Atua of air will claim a star system or more. They are the only Atua that can extend beyond the sphere of a single star. Spirits of air are said to aid travelers who are true to themselves. As a group, spirits of Air are the least interested in humanoid affairs

Earth Spirits
Ki Spirits of earth are simultaneously the most reserved and the most decisive of the elemental spirits. They are highly supportive of humanoid life but prefer not to intervene unless absolutely necessary. Atua of earth inhabit entire planets, moons, or asteroid belts

Fire Spirits
Ki Spirits of fire can be comprised of elemental fire, electricity, or light, making them the most diverse in their constitution. Due to this trichotomy, many humanoids in the galaxy believe in six types of ki spirits, instead of four. Atua of fire inhabit the galaxy's stars and are comprised of elemental fire and light, simultaneously. These spirits are passionate and stable, and watch humanoid affairs closely. The galaxy's firestorms are made of elemental fire, electricity, and sometimes both. These spirits are wild and chaotic, and involve themselves in the affairs of humans at their whim. The rarest spirits are made purely of light, emanating light without elemental fire. Early in these spirits life-cycle they are stationary, and are mistaken for Dwarf stars. As they age they become mobile and gain the ability to mask their energy temporarily. These spirits take keen interest in humanoid affairs and are benevolent, with notable and extreme exceptions

Water Spirits
Ki Spirits of water are universally regarded as the most consistently favorable spirits toward humanoids. Atua of water especially see themselves as the foundation of humanoid life and consider themselves its primary caretaker. Atua of water inhabit free oceans and planetary oceans, often comprising the majority of water on a given planet. They also take the form of massive cloud banks, drifting though the galaxy without direction or purpose. Spirits of water are good-natured, friendly, and patient

Shadow Spirits
Ki Spirits of shadow, or aether, are rare and relatively unknown across the galaxy. There is no Deva of shadow, and there are only four Suras of shadow. Atua of shadow extremely rare, realtive to the vast numbers of their elemental counterparts, but they tend to be significantly more powerful. Shadow spirits are hostile towards the elemental ki spirits and to humanoids in general. They are without exception fixated on growing their power which requires the consumption of destroyed elemental matter. Historically shadow spirits have avoided interaction with humanoids at all costs, though this has changed as their power grows and consumption needs increase
