The backside of this carapace is studded. Their skin is covered in thin scales. Their arms and legs are relatively short. Their feet have a subdued ankle and they have thick toenail plates protecting the front of the foot. Their faces have wide set eyes and a prominent nose as with a turtle. The males of the species have facial hair under the chin and on the neck, which is typically grown out and sometimes braided
